ABSTRACT

Geosynthetic lining systems can involve different products with different functions. This chapter presents performance tests developed to determine the efficiency of some of these products, based on the following parameters: water permeability and diffusion coefficients of the geomembrane; friction coefficients of the soil/geocomposite interface or at the interface of two different geocomposites; and transmissivity coefficients (drainage capacity) of geocomposites. Multipurpose testing equipment has been developed at IRIGM. The drainage capacity of the geocomposites under pressure thus depends not only on the shape and size of the empty space in the core, but also and above all on the mechanical behaviour of the filter stretched on its support. This also has a long-term effect on the behaviour. It is thus important to test the geocomposites with apparatus that will clearly reveal the behaviour of the core-filter (or geomembrane) system, in order to determine the most suitable draining structure.
