ABSTRACT

Quality control assurance (QCA) is fundamental in order to obtain satisfactory performance and effectiveness of landfill barrier systems. Quality can be defined as the level of performance of the lining and leachate collection system and its components with respect to specific requirements. Design quality control (DQC) should be considered a preliminary tool for verifying the quality of a barrier system design. The aim of DQC is to verify compliance of the barrier design with technology standards and guidance. The aim of the construction quality control program, once more carried out by a third-party team, is to provide quality certification, information and reports to the control authorities and/or the owner of the landfill. The programme of inspection activities consists of observations and tests to be performed by the QCA officer during the construction of the barrier system. A correct landfill operation is as fundamental as good design and construction.
