ABSTRACT

There is an increasing requirement for guidelines or recommendations concerned with the geo-technical aspects of waste disposal sites. Quality control must be directed, on the one hand, to the design itself, in a way similar to common construction engineering practice, and on the other hand to the performance of the work on-site, with the check-proving of soil samples etc. The safety elements must be set out both in their independent functions and in their mutual influence and overall safety effect. The suitability of minerals to be used to seal landfills generally should be proved separately for each specific application. Erosion means the removal and transport of the particles in a soil as a result of liquid flow. The risk of external erosion affects any element of the liner and capping system exposed on steep slopes. For clay materials normally used in sealing landfill sites there have been no documented failures caused by internal erosion.
