ABSTRACT

Aging at work is considered as a broad process, which should be taken account of throughout working life, but should also be perceived as a result, partly as a consequence of the effects of harmful work constraints. The understanding of this complex issue, which enables effective action to be taken from the ergonomic viewpoint, involves an interdisciplinary approach that links results from various origins without superposition. Some examples are given, taken from recent research. In the present demographic, social, economic and technical context 'aging at work' should and may be perceived as a dynamic and positive phenomenon, encompassed within the human being's development, so that the beautiful Swedish slogan, 'to age is to grow', can become reality, in working life at least.
