ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the findings of a comprehensive telephone survey conducted at the beginning of 1993 in the context of the Danish research programme on the Diffusion and Impact of Geographic information systems (GIS) on Local Government in Denmark. The survey was carried out in a comparative framework with the studies in Great Britain and covered all 275 municipalities and 14 counties in Denmark. The survey of 1993 on the diffusion of GIS in local government in Denmark provides information on: Today all municipalities have access to a range of digital registers. The figures of expectations in the counties are even higher as the predicted level of GIS adoption before 1995 is 64%. It is possible that the adoption of GIS in Danish local government will be influenced to some extent by similar factors or by competitive development of more user-friendly register based information systems for local users.
