ABSTRACT

This chapter describes and evaluates the findings of a second comprehensive survey of all 514 British local authorities that was carried out for the Local Government Management Board between June and September 1993 using the same methodology as the earlier survey. The system with which the majority of the population in Great Britain was familiar at the time of the survey was that found in England and Wales. Because of this it is possible to directly compare the findings of the two surveys to highlight the dynamics of Geographic information systems (GIS) diffusion within British local government. The findings of the 1993 survey reported in this paper provide a comprehensive overview of GIS diffusion in British local government. The volatile nature of the GIS diffusion process is highlighted when the findings of the 1993 survey are compared with those from an earlier survey carried out by the authors using the same methodology.
