ABSTRACT

Despite the potential of geographical information systems (GIS) for planning, there is substantial evidence that the diffusion of this technology in planning departments is a very slow process and that planners have not yet accepted GIS as one of the main tools in the planning process. Local planning is a very creative process, and one of the things learnt about the computer is that it is a very rational tool, so for the planners of today it is a question of how to combine the creativity of the process with the rationality of the tool. The introduction of computing in planning agencies has mostly been conducted without considering the daily work situation of the planners. The world of GIS is changing rapidly and so is the organisation of work and data connected to local planning in Denmark. New digital maps and attribute data will be available to the planner, and computers will become even more indispensable in the office.
