ABSTRACT

The microstructural characterization of a cast aluminium alloy reinforced with a boron fibre coated with silicon carbide was undertaken. The as received composite material showed a cast microstructure with the presence of intermetallic particles. EDS chemical analyses in the SEM were extensively used to identify the macro constituents. Many constituents were also chemically analysed in a TEM. Solute solvent plots were constructed from the analysed constituents and a graphical EDS data analysis manipulation technique enabled the chemistry of the particles to be inferred from the SEM data.
