ABSTRACT

I vividly recall Eric Rogers in Edinburgh in 1975, demonstrating free fall by dropping two pieces of chalk. This was my first visit to Europe and my first international conference on physics education. Amongst the many international leaders in physics education whom I met there, Eric Rogers stands out as especially impressive. I have never forgotten his lecture, and since then have always used the same demonstration in introductory courses for non-science university students. I like the demonstration because it is so simple that students can do it themselves and so come to understand the work of Galileo.
