ABSTRACT
It is generally taken for granted that experimental work is an essential and valuable part of any instruction in physics, and effort is continually being invested in its design. However, much of this effort is concerned with particular devices or experiments, whilst the general question of the purpose and value of experimental work is less often discussed.
