ABSTRACT

Optical processors (OPs) can perform parallel signal processing at rates much greater than conventional signal processing and are very promising for signal processing applications. New, high-speed, high-dynamic-range integrated photodetector arrays (PDAs) followed by high-speed microelectronic signal preprocessors are needed with much more demanding parameters than those of conventional modern imaging systems. These include high-speed GaAs and silicon photodetectors and PDAs. GaAs PDAs for spectrum analysis and coherent GaAs photodetectors and PDAs for excision, single-sideband and main-band suppression, and signal synthesis are reviewed and compared with PDAs developed using silicon technology. The PDAs are often the technology pacing components in OP applications.
