ABSTRACT

In this paper, we present a simple method for calculating the valence-band structure of strained-layer quantum wells. The method consists of expanding the envelope functions of the Luttinger-Kohn Hamiltonian using Fourier expansion, and would be useful to calculate the confined states in the quantum well for which the envelope function decays very rapidly in the barrier regions so that the homogeneous boundary conditions can be imposed. The effects of the spin-orbit (SO) split-off band coupling on the valence-band structure are studied within the 6×6 Luttinger-Kohn model.
