ABSTRACT

The effect is considered of population inversion in so-called electron-nuclear (mixed) transitions in an atomic ions, which are due to the changes the state of the electron shell of the ion undergoes upon the absorption or emission of a γ-quantum [1, 2]. The intensity of such transitions (satellites) in multiply charged ions with a heavy nucleus is rather high [3]. Moreover, in multiply charged ions there may take place a partial population inversion for such transitions [4]. Mixed electron-nuclear transitions can be observed by electronically exciting low-lying isomeric levels in heavy nuclei in a laser-produced plasma [5].
