ABSTRACT
Some types of spatial solitons in refractive materials are reviewed, in the light of a recent upsurge of interest in this area. The fundamental equations are given in accessible form and a survey of experimental evidence is presented. The emphasis, throughout, is on the bright envelope solitons in photorefractive media but some discussion is given of possible applications, including optical switching.
