ABSTRACT
Nanometre-sized protrusions have been grown at the apices of tungsten field emitters using a surface melting technique. Electrons were extracted from such a “nanotip” installed as the source in a 100 kV STEM; the emission characteristics of this novel emitter were observed as a function of various gun lens settings and a high resolution image formed.
