ABSTRACT

Parallel arrays of very long, narrow, planar features lying on {110} Nb3Al planes found in a Nb-20at.%Al alloy oxidised in still air for 8 h at 650 °C have been characterised using transmission electron microscopy. Diffuse dark field imaging and HRTEM indicated a lack of crystallinity while EDX analysis showed a high oxygen concentration and a deficiency in niobium relative to Nb3Al. This local oxidation process enables Nb3Al to have an improved oxidation resistance relative to pure niobium.
