ABSTRACT

A significant cause of engine oil degradation is due to particles produced in the combustion process. A study of these particulates is important in the development of lubricating oils, to extend the working life of the oil and to reduce particulate emissions. Using a novel method based upon centrifuging and solvent extraction, particles have been analysed using scanning electron microscopy and the results further confirmed by atomic force microscopy. Particles of less than 1 µm have been seen, and agglomerates have been shown to contain surface layers of elements contained within the oil additives.
