ABSTRACT

Experiments on the L3, L2 edges of TiS2 have been performed using Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy. To interpret the small anisotropy observed, band structure and multiplet calculations considering the D3d symmetry of the titanium site have been used. Reasonable agreement is achieved with experiment since the splittings of the empty levels are very well reproduced. It is hoped that this will assist in assessing the importance of the dz2 orbital in the intercalation of species in the van der Waals gap.
