ABSTRACT

Spatially resolved PEEL and EDX spectra of the edges of soot spherules and necks between have been taken by exploiting the nanoprobe capabilities of the VG HB601 North West STEM. The soot was extracted from engine lubricants. The sensitivity to calcium (from lubricant additives) in soot is similar for both spectroscopies. The distribution of calcium on the soot varies with samples. In some cases the calcium only adheres to the soot in areas with low graphitic nature, as evidenced by the C K-ELNES.
