ABSTRACT

The Naval Research Laboratory is currently investigating wideband gyro-amplifiers as high power sources for millimetre wave radars. A theoretical model was developed to analyse the cyclotron maser interaction in the gyrotwystron configuration (Latham and Nusinovich, 1995). Recently, the simple bunching model described in Latham and Nusinovich (1995) has been improved, and the theory now includes explicit modelling of the buncher cavities. A numerical code, based upon the model, was written and a W-band gyrotwystron design is presented as an example. Studies show that careful design of the travelling wave section is necessary to minimise the backward wave interaction over a wide bandwidth.
