ABSTRACT

Many software development organizations are now using standard design methods. Because a method concentrates the designer's attention on different issues at different times, it is fruitful to analyze, compare, and support different methods in an issue-based framework. In our work, we have extended the IBIS model in several ways to accommodate design methodological concepts. In this chapter three such extensions are reviewed, illustrated, and compared: (a) the embellishment of IBIS by method-specific constructs, (b) the specialization of IBIS in method-specific ways, and (c) the incorporation into IBIS of the results of objective analysisand simulation. We conclude that the second approach is the most extensible, but that relaxation of the IBIS model (as is possible in the third approach) is necessary for practical use on design projects.
