ABSTRACT

It was proposed (Bregman, 1990) that auditory organization is performed by a wide range of grouping principles. One problem facing any computational model incorporating a number of these principles is that of resolving the conflict arising when several principles suggest mutually exclusive organizations. This chapter presents a principled computational framework within which conflicts are resolved by a context-sensitive evidence accumulation mechanism. The mechanism exhibits several properties consistent with human auditory organization. Additionally, as grouping principles operate in complete independence, the framework allows any number of grouping principles to be incorporated.
