ABSTRACT

Hair conditioners are an important hair care product category with an estimated retail market of about $940 million in the United States alone and probably a few times higher number in sales worldwide (Chain Drug Review, 1996). These products are designed to serve several functions, with the most important being to improve hair appearance, combability (detangling), and manageability. Some conditioning formulations can improve shine, change color, or impart styling if appropriate ingredients are included in the formula. Also, an important product category which has emerged during the last 20 years is that of conditioning shampoos.
