ABSTRACT

I. INTRODUCTION

The genesis of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system is the need for a scientific basis for matching donors and recipients in transplantation. It is the human analogue of the mouse histocompatibility system, H-2. As this genetic system has a major effect on the survival of a transplantable tumor and the susceptibility to viral leukemogenesis in mice, it is conjectured that the HLA may provide clues to cancer in humans.
