ABSTRACT

I. INTRODUCTION

The development of a comprehensive and valid strategy for cancer control is the underlying goal of all forms of cancer research. In the light of limited advances toward a “cure” in basic biomedical research, research has recently focused on the issue of prevention. However, because the etiologies of cancer have been, and to a large extent remain, incompletely understood, the early detection of cancer has become an important part of this focus. Thus, screening programs are playing a larger role in the cancer control effort.
