ABSTRACT

Generally, localized corrosion includes various types of corrosion phenomena such as pitting, crevice corrosion, and intergranular attack as well as stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue. The latter two forms of corrosion are discussed in other chapters of this book and will therefore not be considered here. Since the book is entirely devoted to corrosion mechanisms the scope of this chapter will be limited to pitting corrosion, where several detailed mechanisms have been proposed, in contrast to crevice corrosion, where only fragmentary contributions are available at present. It is the author's opinion that for a more rigorous treatment of crevice corrosion, still deeper insight into the corrosion mechanisms of pitting is required. With respect to intergranular attack, mechanical aspects would certainly have to be included, which is beyond the scope of this contribution.
