ABSTRACT

Strongyloides stercoralis, first identified as the etiological agent of the "Cochin China diarrhea" by Normand in 1876 (1), has been long regarded as an exotic parasite, found only in tropical regions, or in troops, travelers, and immigrants from developing countries. This view can no longer be held. Endemic foci of strongyloidiasis have been identified in Europe and North America (2,3), and sporadic indigenous cases are being reported with increasing frequency from industrialized countries.
