ABSTRACT

The decision to perform or not to perform tasks of daily living for individuals with seizures revolves around the fear of injury and/or possible death if an accident were to occur while engaging in the activity. The most critical component in deciding to participate in activities is how it can be done without increasing these risks. Planning ahead to consider areas or activities that might pose an increased risk is essential. Getting everyone involved to consider how potential problems might be avoided or risks decreased is a necessary first step. Alteration and loss of consciousness coupled with the possibility of falling are the underlying causes for potential injury. The patients may be able to offer other suggestions specific to their geographic location and medical situation. The following safety tips, when appropriately applied to a variety of activities, can facilitate the patient’s participation in activities of daily living.
