The team should include a counselor, a social worker, or a nurse well versed in area of seizures and their associated problems. This individual should be abreast of range of related services within the community such as epilepsy education, supported employment, financial criterion for medical services, and alternative residential programs. In the absence of an affiliate, the counselor should know of alternative community groups and should utilize the Epilepsy Foundation of America through its toll-free number for information and referral. The counselor acts as a liaison between the medical community and the support agency. Many patients are excluded from health insurance and need assistance in gaining access to these services. The counselor can be most helpful in facilitating the process and helping the patient through this maze. The counselor should know about criteria for eligibility and should be able to work with the family to assist developmentally disabled individuals, adult or child, to function in the community despite seizures.
