ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the requirements for developing a Knowledge-Based Support (KBS) for multivariable control system design capable of providing the type of support. Multivariable Analysis and Interactive Design (MAID) is a prototype KBS for multivariable control system design. To the best of our knowledge, it is the only Knowledge-Based Support System for Multivariable Frequency-Domain Control System Design that has been successfully commissioned and used in industry. The design of several multivariable control design problems has been successfully completed by control engineers using the developed software. MAID handles multivariable frequency-domain control engineering design. It is an interactive design environment that guides control engineers through the multivariable design process. The formalization of the prototype version of MAID knowledge base was built entirely on production rules. A primitive design specialist always occurs in conjunction with a primitive analysis specialist that checks the design.
