334When phospholipids and synthetic double-chained surfactants are added into aqueous solutions during sonicating, they can form liposomes and/or vesicles consisting of a lipid bilayer (hydrophobic portions) and an inner water phase (hydrophilic portions). Liposomes and/or vesicles can solubilize organic compounds and water-soluble compounds simultaneously. In this study, the incorporation of amphoteric compounds, lipophilic compounds, and/or alcoholic compounds into the lipid bilayers (hydrophobic portions) of liposomes and/or vesicles were examined. Large amounts of amphoteric compounds and lipophilic compounds which penetrate into the lipid bilayers will result in destruction of the bilayer structure and an increase in water-soluble compound leakage. Moreover, an alcoholic compound is able to solubilize more strongly by vesicles than by micelles having monolayer structures.
