ABSTRACT
The understanding of a biological process is greatly increased by the availability of information on the physiological state of the growing biomass and by knowing how characteristics related to the physiological state are distributed within the cell population. In general, little information is available on this critical issue, since conventional sensors measure only average quantities in the population.
