ABSTRACT

The fully filled zone or the pump zone is an important feature in the working of the twin screw extruder. By incorporating the reaction parameters of the bulk polymerization in an interaction diagram of the counterrotating twin screw extruder, a reactive extrusion interaction diagram is achieved. The counterrotating twin screw extruder used in this work is closely intermeshing and consists of series of C-shaped chambers in which material is transported toward the die. By incorporating the reaction parameters of the bulk polymerization in an interaction diagram of the counterrotating twin screw extruder, a reactive extrusion interaction diagram is achieved. The influences of the reaction and extruder parameters on the reaction process in the extruder were investigated by doing experiments with n-butylmethacrylate in a counterrotating twin screw extruder. The experimental setup consisted of feeding a mixture of n-butylmethacrylate, with a combination of a fast initiator and a slow initiator to the extruder, at room temperature.
