ABSTRACT

The Market Street Bridge in Wheeling, WV connects the Central Business District with the historic Market Street Plaza. This is one of the main bridges in the commercial section of Wheeling and is highly important for the economics of the local businesses. This method of joining prohibited placing any type of attachment until the panels were in place. In order to provide a positive attachment to the girders, the design team detailed a field welded threaded stud to be placed on 2’ centers on the outside two girders on each side and 4’ centers on the interior girders. In integral abutment construction, the backwall of the abutment encases the ends of the beams. This backwall cannot be placed until most of the deflection is taken out of the beams. The use of this decking material is expected to reduce future maintenance costs.
