ABSTRACT

This paper reviews three examples, providing practical design and manufacturing ideas for the emerging infrastructure industry. The examples illustrate the transition process from applied research to commercial products.

The NSF-powerpole example illustrates the ability to form tubular structures with varying cross-section, on the basis of straight pultruded sections.

The wind turbine blade example illustrates the power of thermoplastic composites in forming and joining complex surfaces.

Finally the GIFT housing example illustrates the quick assembly rugged structures, which have been designed to have substantially more staying power when subject to earthquakes and natural disasters.
