ABSTRACT

Consequently, a number of investigators developed new ideas of preconditioning which include adenosine, potassium channel opening, immobilization stress, oxidative stress, and finally, heat shock. Hearts can be adapted by subjecting them to direct heat shock. Similar to myocardial adaptation to ischemic or heat shock stress, the heart can be adapted to oxidative stress by a variety of methods. Transcription of heat shock and oxidative stress inducible genes has been observed during myocardial adaptation to ischemia. Catalase was inducible by both oxidative stress and heat shock. For example, animals can be subjected to oxidative stress by being treated with a low dose of endotoxin. Global ischemia was induced for 30 min by terminating the coronary flow, which was followed by 60 min of reperfusion. Transcription of heat shock and oxidative stress inducible genes has been observed during myocardial adaptation to ischemia.
