ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book starts with the historical background of the use of natural polymers in building materials. It deals with the hydration of Portland cement, durability problems in concrete, mechanisms of concrete deterioration, interaction of polymers in concrete, simple classification of polymers in concrete, properties of concrete made with polymers addition, and practical applications of polymers in concrete. The book provides information about polymers to people whose expertise is in building materials and will provide new information to the polymer experts. The natural polymers of ancient times were used according to their local availability since transportation technology was primitive. Demands on durability increased, and polymers were also tried in making Portland cement concrete. The problem is that people knowledgeable about polymers lack background in building materials and that people versed in building materials do not well understand polymer technology.
