ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how the desperate studies of the past 15 years of direct drive may be able to reach a solution to the problems of direct drive, so that conditions for fusions reactors may be achieved with lower laser energies. It summarizes the extent to which the former plasma theory had to be generalized and extended from the experience of the direct laser-plasma interaction. The study of laser-plasma interaction resulted in several merits of achievements for plasma theory. The result can be expressed also as using the Maxwellian Stress Tensor for the vacuum: Another result which did change the scenario of plasma theory by the study of laser-plasma interaction is the realization of the large electric fields. While the question is an important point to be solved for direct drive, we must be aware that the main goal of smoothing is to overcome the much more severe problem of the 10 to 40-psec pulsation by suppressing the Laue-Bragg ripple.
