ABSTRACT
Together with glucose and free fatty acids, amino acids (AA) represent a source of energy for the body, as they can be either oxidized or converted to glucose via the gluconeogenetic pathway in the liver. 1 While the metabolism of the AA mainly occurs in the liver, the largest reservoir of AA within the mammalian body is the skeletal muscle, where well over 50% of the total pool of free AA is stored.
