ABSTRACT

The wellhaarig (we) mutation arose as a spontaneous mutation in stocks of Anges Bluhm. The we mutation was originally maintained on the UW strain but was later transferred by Snell and Bunker to the C57BL/10 background. The mutation on this strain was crossed and backcrossed to C57BL/10 to remove the segment of Chromosome 7 from 129 containing p H-4. When double mutants are created with either of the wellhaarig mutations (we or we) and pallid (pa, Chromosome 2, features: pink eyes, light coat color, platelet storage pool deficiency, absence of otoliths), an unusual complementary interaction occurs. Wellhaarig is maintained on the B6C3Fe a/a hybrid background by the Jackson Laboratory Genetic Resource. Embryos from B6C3Fe a/a we un a and B6CBACa A/A we a kr stocks and wellhaarig-Bunker are preserved in the Jackson Laboratory Frozen Embryo Bank. DNA extracts are available from the Mouse DNA Resource at the Jackson Laboratory.
