ABSTRACT

The infant food industry has been credited by some experts, such as Aykroyd with making a significant contribution to the improvement of infant survival and health in the industrialized societies during the early years of this century. The changes in women’s lifestyles - their ability to join the work force, enjoy more leisure and mobilize for more forceful political and social involvement would perhaps have proved more difficult and slower had not the time-consuming tasks of infant and young child feeding been made easier by the availability of nutritionally satisfactory and safe breast milk substitutes and almost ready-to-use weaning foods. The infant food industry is relatively young - less than 100 years old. Definition of the term infant food industry is itself a matter which has not been completely settled. The milk industry, if such it may be called in the 19th century, was completely unregulated and conditions of production, transport and storage extremely dirty.
