ABSTRACT

The Desktop Management Interface (DMI) represents a specification developed by the Desktop Management Task Force (DMTF), a consortium of hardware and software manufacturers and developers that included AST Research, Compaq, Dell Computer, IBM, Microsoft, and Lotus. Because the DMIs depend on the installation of their service layer on each computer to be managed, most, if not all, data center managers and local area network administrators can be expected to insist on the automatic loading of the Desktop Management Interface service layer on all DMI-compliant desktop computers. In addition to being able to determine and report information concerning the hardware and software components in a desktop computer, Desktop Management Interface provides benefits that include automatic execution of asset management and smoother communications with technical support specialists concerning information required to troubleshoot a computer and expedite its configuration.
