ABSTRACT

End-user applications development has since evolved to include complex applications developed by groups of users and shared across departmental boundaries throughout the organization. The method for reviewing end-user-developed applications discussed in this chapter can provide information not only for improving application quality but for determining the effectiveness of end-user computing (and end-user computing support) in general. A review of user-developed applications can indicate the need for changes in the end-user computing support department and its services as well as in its system of controls. Reviewing end-user applications requires that some resources (e.g., time and money) be spent. A review of end-user applications is often low on senior management’s priority list. The increase in the number of end users developing complex applications and the corresponding reliance of decision makers at all levels of the organization on the data produced by these applications make a careful evaluation of the applications a necessary endeavor.
