ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes how posture affects emotions. Two experiments were conducted. The first experiment investigated the relationship between postures and emotions. Postures were considered independent variables, and mood states dependent variables. Measures of posture were derived from back and head angles. Measures of posture were derived from back and head angles. These six postures which were investigated included straight or hunched back, and downward, straight or upward head orientations. To determine whether specific postures influenced mood state, subjects were asked to imagine a particular posture and report the mood created by this image. The second experiment examined the effect of particular postures on the mood of subjects exposed to a mood-governing stimulus. The purpose of the above two experiments was to examine the relationship between postures and mood state, and the corresponding implications on seating and posture.
