ABSTRACT

The objective of this chapter is to develop a simple method for allocating chair sizes for individual elementary school pupils. Japanese Industrial Standards S 1021 includes a reference table for allocating chairs based on stature. However, this table account for such characteristics as obesity, which are common with many elementary school children. The reasons for adopting the fuzzy inference is described later but summarized here. The knowledge base is composed of production rules in which features such as large and long are described using ambiguous daily language with fuzzy sets. The fuzzy system is also equipped with a user interface that allows teachers to easily enter perceived pupil stature and production rules. The objective of the field experiment was to validate the production rules and to refine the membership functions which ascribe values to these rules. This system can currently only be generalized for allocating chairs to fourth graders.
