ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an alternative ‘ecological’ framework regarding seated work posture. In retrospect, specification of work posture was considered a relatively straightforward anthropometric problem. Pressure gradients on discs and abdominal viscera increase; posture may contribute to recent reports of adverse pregnancy outcomes. These and other concerns regarding fixed work postures underscore the necessity of good ergonomic design. Postures were analysed with potentiometers that were connected to each of the three major chair adjustments; these were seat pan height, seat pan angle, and back rest angle. Computerized data capture allowed a continuous recording of all three axes of chair position throughout the course of the experiment.
