ABSTRACT

The man at centre is a subject at the experimental work station. The keyboard and CRT display of the experimental system were placed on the desk to simulate video display terminal work. Ergonomics was introduced into Japan in the mid-1950s. Since weight and age are more closely correlated with stature than with preferred desk and chair heights, the experimental data of male subjects were analyzed by multiple regression analysis. Data on both stature and weight underscore an increase of mean stature compared to studies in Japan, and suggest that sex differences exist in selected chair and desk heights. The experimental work station was demonstrated and tested at exhibitions such as the Business Show and the Office Environment Exhibition, whose attendees are office workers. Exhibition attendees who participated in the experiment expressed an understanding of the potential for incurring fatigue due to improper chair and desk heights when they compared their preferred chair and desk heights with those predicted and displayed by computer.
