ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces human perception of wetlands from a historical perspective; reviews the literature on how people perceive environmental quality in relation to odor, water quality, and wetland quality; and outlines a data gathering framework to assess public perceptions on the role of wetlands in water quality enhancement. A literature review provides some useful information as to how people will react to sensory environmental quality aspects of wetlands loaded with wastewater. Four important components of the Public Use Research Program at the Des Plaines Project or a wetland site utilized for wastewater treatment include public perception; physical site user survey; interpretation/communication; and operation and management. The strategy has been successful so far for the Des Plaines River Wetlands Demonstration Project and is likely to enhance public acceptance and support for other wetland restoration programs as well as constructed wetlands used for wastewater treatment.
