ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the following information: The design of any biological reactor requires the development of kinetic expressions for microbial growth and substrate removal. The membrane modules were connected in series and a corrugated plate interceptor was operated as part of the feed pretreatment step for a period of time in an attempt to ensure removal of free oil from the wastewater. Solids balances were completed across the membrane biological reactor (MBR) system during each equilibrium experiment of the pilot plant studies in order to determine a solids net yield coefficient. The design of the full-scale MBR demonstration system was based on the results of the pilot plant studies completed at New Departure Hyatt and the C-P-C Mansfield wastewater characterization information developed by the GM Argonaut AEC group. The pilot plant results presented are based on data collected under both equilibrium and nonequilibrium conditions. The observed solids net yield coefficient was significantly higher than that determined during the pilot plant studies.
