ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the problems and attempts to indicate where future bioremediation research should be directed. Work at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Gulf Breeze Laboratory has demonstrated the potential usefulness of encapsulation in the bioremediation of polyaromatic hydrocarbon. In response to these limitations and challenges, the Office of Research and Development (ORD) in EPA has developed an integrated bioremediation research and technology development program to advance the use of bioremediation in solving hazardous waste problems. In response to these limitations, the ORD in EPA has developed an integrated bioremediation research and technology development program to advance the use of bioremediation in solving hazardous waste problems. The intensification of efforts and the immediacy of the need for resolution of problems has emphasized the importance of prioritizing bioremediation research activities. The bioremediation research relies heavily on risk assessment approaches emanating from the Ecological Risk Assessment Methods Program and the Risk Assessment Methods Program.
